Judge, Jury and Execution: Luther, Analysis

Background

In this scene Ian has been caught by Luther. The scene is very dramatic and tense. The counter stereotype in this is that the woman is the heroin and saves Luther's life however she comes across quite manipulative in previous episodes and is made more sexualised which is a common stereotype. It shows the emotion of 3 characters and their different views on how they believe Ian should be punished.

Camera

In this clip there are lots of close up shots used, this shows the true emotion in their face such as the fear and anger, and helps the audience to relate and be drawn in. A point of view shot is used to show the scene from Luther and Ian Reeds perspective. This helps the audience connect with the characters and become more attached to the series.

Sound

At the start of the clip Ian Reeds voice is shaking showing his fear but at the same time could show how he is slightly crazy and trying to get inside Luthers head. Luthers voice shows clear aggression and increases in volume to show his anger. By hearing the emotion in their voices the audience is able to understand the characters and see how their lives are. There is background music playing at around 38 seconds this turns into a drum beat. This builds the scene and makes it more dramatic. The beat could also be a representation a heart beat and all the pressure and aggression the characters are facing. The overlap of voices at 3:18 is important to show how no one knows exactly what to do and their emotions is overpowering their heads. A counter stereotype is when the woman appears and speaks in a calm taunting voice, this gets into his head and therefore shows she has power over him. The music at the end is used to signify the end and his death.

Mise-en-scene

The scene is quiet as there is no one else around. The men are wearing suits showing they have higher up professions. Alex is dressed quite formally, as though she is going to work. However she is holding a gun showing that she is different and is there for a reason. They use fake blood this is slightly unrealistic as it has just been put all over his chest. Another counter stereotype is that as soon as the woman walks in it goes quite calm and makes Ian stop what he is doing. She saves Luther's life and therefore is an important character as she has power over the men.

Editing

They use a shot-reverse-shot to quickly switch between characters. This builds tension and the audience is then able to see the variety of emotions on the characters faces. This helps the viewer work out what the character is actually thinking which draws them in more.

The Male Gaze

At the start of the music video, it opens with Shakira belly dancing in minimal clothing. She does this in a very seductive way. However the male that is singing is fully clothed this may show how women need to be seen as sexy and attractive where as the man is just showing off his talent of music and doesn't need anything else to grab the audiences attention.

At 17 seconds into the video she is very flirting and enticing as she grinds against the wall and shows off her figure. This shows how she may be seen as an object and she accompanies his singing with her image.

40 seconds in the male singer says 'Hey girl, I can see your body moving and it's driving me crazy'. Showing how he just focuses on her body and figure not how pretty she is or even her personality etc. He doesn't even use her name when dressing her he just says her gender showing how he only focuses on sexuality. He also goes on to sing 'I didn't have the slightest idea until I saw you dancing.' This is also an example of how he didn't seem to care about her until he saw her body and was seduced.

At around the 42 second mark the man is trying to find the woman through the fabrics.

There are a lot of special effects used in the film, this is one of the reasons the film is so popular. John Dykstra is the special effects designer on the Star Wars films. Most of the sounds in the film are special effects to make it seem more realistic. CGI played a big part in this film and is what made it look so spectacular and gave it the sci-fi element. Camera work is very important as this provides the viewer with the action aspect of the film and makes it more gripping.
Any issues
Many Star Wars fans were not happy with the little screen time Luke Skywalker got in the film.

It's about a vet and his family who emigrate to south Africa from Bristol, England to care for animals and own rehabilitation for wild animals. • Our Girl- Our Girl is a mainstream drama produced by BBC, it's about a woman in the armed forces. She's a medic who was sent to Kenya to help others but is then kidnaped by a terrorist group.

Our Girl: Representation of Gender and Ethnicity

Our girl is a TV Drama shown on BBC One. This is a mainstream drama about a white British woman who works as a medic in the Army. Georgie Lane played by Michelle Keegan is over in Kenya to help as she is seen to be one of the best. In this programme thereis multiple representations of gender and ethnicity shown.

Image result for our girl michelle keeganGender

The first gender stereotype is that the medic is a woman. Women are seen to be unable to fight on front line and instead handle taking care of other people. However, there is a counter stereotype linking to this as a woman in the army isn't common. In all of the posters of Michelle Keegan playing the part of Georgie she is wearing lots of make-up and seems very neat and tidy. This could also be seen as stereotype because the woman has to be made to look nice even though she is representing someones role in the army.
In the clip we watched from episode 2 season 2, Georgie had been kidnapped and taking hostage. The men overpower her and she gasps for air and panics showing she's a victim. The terrorist group don't seem bothered about her well being and are just using the woman to make people better. She is also thrown in a cage with another white woman and they are forced to stay there and sit on the dirty floor and treated with no respect from the men. Another representation of how women are treated in this episode is that she is never trusted to just walk on her own, instead she has to be dragged around by men showing that she has no contol of her actions and has to do what she is told to do.

Ethnicity

Ethnicity is represented in multiple ways in the episode. One representation is that Abu is white converted Muslim, this is a counter stereotype as this is not a usual thing in society but Abu's beliefs are clearly related to the Muslims. Abu refers to himself as 'us' so he sees himself as one of them and that he's no different. However, Zaki who is a muslim actually doesn't want to fight and be apart of the terrorist group which shows him as young and vulnerable and in a way may show how he knows right from wrong and believes what they are doing isn't right. The terrorist group objectify Georgie as they don't ever call her by her name instead they call her a 'white hostage' and therefore show no respect to other cultures even though Abu was originally British so this shows he knows how they are treated in society compared to other religions. Elvis is an Asian British this shows that he has more than one faith and culture. Abu says to Zakki that 'one woman is as valuable as a thousand black children' showing that he understand how people are treated and he knows what people will do to free the woman so he uses this against the Army to get what he wants.

Editing

During the end of episode 1 and start of episode 2 of our girl, Georgie Lane is kidnapped. In this scene there is a lot of fast paced editing as everything is very dramatic and builds up tension for the viewer. The scenes need to change quickly between characters to show whats happening and build up the scene.

Camera

There are lots of different camera angles used to show emotion and the representation of gender in the end of episode 1 and start of episode 2. The cameras zoom out to show area and scenery, this shows the wrecked houses showing the poverty of the country. There is an Ariel shot of the car driving away when they are in the middle of nowhere showing the distance away from society and how she's been taken away from civilisation. In this episode  the camera shows the view from her perspective for example when climbing in the truck. By the camera being at her level it makes the viewers understand her position and feel on her side. When she's being dragged from the truck towards the abandoned building the camera follows her feet and gives the impression that you're also being dragged.

Sound

Sound is an important part in to and film as it can be used to show emotion and build
tension. Music is used when the car is driving way to build tension and draw in the viewer as no one knows where the girl is being taken. The music increases in pitch. The emotion in their voices is key to show the atmosphere. You can hear the panic in her voice and the fear how her voice shakes. The anger in the terrorist voices is very clear as they give orders in a stern aggressive way. All the music cuts out and it's silent, it then focuses on her heavy breathing and her pain. This makes it a lot more dramatic and sets the atmosphere. The gun shots are digetic and synchronous. Other sound effects used are things such as footsteps, screams in the distant, all of this together builds to a crescendo.

Mise-en-scene

The setting is in Kenya, it's dusty and houses and buildings are dilapidated showing the country's poverty. A stereotype of Muslim terrorists is used as they have their faces covered just showing their eyes. This is helpful to the audience as it shows their true emotions and therefore the audience can see how the people truly feel. They are hiding their true identity. Blood is used after the gunshot scene to suggest death and danger. The black clothing is antagonistic. The leader is in black whereas the rest of them are in red showing how he controls them and has the power.

Film Production

Film Production

  • Development - This is simply the process of 'finding' a story. Ideas for films come from a variety of sources, they can range from novels, real life events to computer game adaptations. Once you've got an idea you'll need someone to write a pitch for you which you take to a film producer in an attempt to get some funding to make your film. Even at this very early stage you need a very clear idea of who you're aiming you film at so you can include elements that will appeal to them.
  • Pre-production - Once you've got funding you establish your budget and can begin to get a film crew together, you can storyboard the script. You also need break the script down into individual scenes and identify all the locations, props, cast members, costumes, special effects and visual effects needed.
  • Production - This is simply the process of 'making' the film. Provided you've done your job properly in the pre-production stage making the film should be straight forward. 'Film' is very expensive and difficult to store so an increasing number of film makers are using digital cameras to save money.
  • Post-production - During this stage you take all the 'film' you've shot and give it to a film editor. They will then begin putting it together. Special effects will be added, a soundtrack will be added, any missing dialogue will be re-recorded and added resulting in a 'rough cut'. This will be shown to the director and a test audience who will offer feedback. Often this causes scenes to be filmed and added or removed.
  • Writer- A writer carefully creates the script for the actors to read, however the screenwriter does far more than provide dialogue for the actors. He or she also shapes the sequence of events in a film to ensure that one scene transitions to the next smoothly.
  • Producer-This producer is essentially the leader and is responsible for managing the production from start to finish. The producer develops the project from the initial idea, makes sure the script is well finsihed,  sorts out finance; making sure everything is in budget and manages the production team that makes the film.
  • Casting director- Works with the director but with the less important actors so for example the extras etc whereas the director will direct big scenes with more A list celebrities.
  • Director- The director runs the shooting of the film and the overall making of it. The director works in the centre of the film production.
  • Film finance-
  • Camera operator- Also referred to as cameraman or camerawoman, they record the making of the film.
  • Editor- The editor will piece together the film. They will cut any scenes or edit any scenes that need touching up.
  • Production designer- The production designer is the first person to turn the script into a visual. They make a draft of the scene on storyboards.
  •  An institution (in the film industry)Any company or organisation that produces, distributes or exhibits films. The BBC makes films with their BBC Films arm; Channel4's Film Four produces films, Working Title also produce films, as does Vertigo Films.
  • Distribution and Marketing- The business of getting films to their audiences by booking them for runs into cinemas and taking them there in vans or through digital downloads; distributors also create the marketing campaign for films producing posters, trailers, websites, organise free previews, press packs, television interviews with the "talent", sign contracts for promotions, competitions, etc. Distributors use their know-how and size to ensure that DVDs of the film end up in stores and on supermarket s.helves.
  • Exhibition- showing films in cinemas or on DVD. Media attention through opening nights and premieres How the audience can see the film: in cinemas, at home, on DVD, through downloads, through television, including premieres, the box office take in the opening weeks; audience reviews which includes those of the film critics, ordinary people, cinemas runs; awards in festivals, The Oscars, BAFTAS, etc.
  • Vertical and Horizontal IntegrationAbsorption into a single firm of several firms involved in all aspects of a product's manufacture from raw materials to distribution.
  • Synergy/Synergies -The interaction of two or more agents (institutions/companies) to ensure a larger effect than if they acted independently. This is beneficial for each company through efficiencies in expertise and costs.
  • Viral Marketing- A marketing technique aiming at reproducing "word of mouth" usually on the internet and through existing social networks. YouTube Video pastiches, trailers, interviews with cast members, the director, writer, etc. You can find interviews of “the talent” trying to gain publicity for your case study films on YouTube. Find some clips from the films we have studied to help you in the exam.
  • Guerilla Marketing- The use of unconventional and low cost marketing strategies to raise awareness of a product. The aim is usually to create “buzz” and “word of mouth” around a film. Unusual stunts to gain publicity (P.R.) on the film’s opening weekend, etc.
  • Media Convergence- Convergence of media occurs when multiple products come together to form one product with the advantages of all of them.
  • Technological Convergence- The growing interractive use of digital technology in the film industry and media which enables people to share, consume and produce media that was difficult or impossible just a few years earlier.
  • A Mainstream Film- A high budget film that would appeal to most segments of an audience. Distributors often spend as much or more than the film cost to make when distributing mainstream films that are given wide or universal releases.
